My Heroes: A Personal Reflection
Today, a heartwarming incident unfolded. My father, my hero, expressed his admiration for me. He described me as a go-getter who motivates others to strive for more, but in a manner that includes love and support. Can you fathom it? One of my heroes, someone I’ve revered all my life, gazed into my eyes and confessed his admiration for me. That, without a doubt, was the pinnacle of my day.
I don’t use the word hero lightly. To me, a hero isn’t just an icon or a legend; it’s someone who embodies strength, perseverance, and love in their actions. Heroes face their fears, encourage others, and tackle adversity with ingenuity and grace. For me, my heroes are my parents. Full stop.
Launching Pad
Right now, I’m in a season of life where my parents’ generosity propels me forward. They’ve opened their home to me and my son, creating a safe, nurturing space where I can dream big and take action on those dreams. Their support feels like a launching pad, lifting me closer to the life I’ve always envisioned.
It’s not just about having a roof over my head—it’s how they invest their time and energy into helping me and my son thrive. My dad and mom are hands-on grandparents, part of the “village” raising my kid. Their kindness and patience make me aspire to be a better parent myself.
The Qualities I Admire
My parents are two of the hardest-working, most generous people I know. Their kindness? Unmatched. Their patience? Inspiring. But their willingness to learn, adapt, and stay open-minded blows me away. They’re constantly evolving and always curious, and that mindset has shaped how I approach challenges in my own life.
As I’ve matured, my bond with my parents has evolved. They will always be “Mom and Dad,” but our relationship is now more balanced. We are friends as well. They lend me their ears, take my ideas seriously, and even allow me to impart some knowledge occasionally. There’s a beautiful exchange of respect and understanding between us, a flow that feels like a precious gift.
Heroes in Every Sense
When I think about what makes someone a hero, it’s not the flashy stuff—the quiet strength, the love, and the perseverance. My parents embody all of this in their own unique ways. They’re not just my role models; they’re my proof that you can face life’s challenges with grace and generosity.
So, when my dad told me he admired me? That was a full-circle moment. To be seen and respected by someone I hold in the highest regard—it’s a feeling I’ll carry with me for a long, long time.
Every day, I’m grateful for the lessons my parents continue to teach me through their actions. And one day, I hope to be even half the hero to my son that my parents have been to me. I understand that this is a tall order, but their example gives me the strength and determination to strive for it.
Here’s to heroes and the love, strength, and support they give us
